Obituaries

Dorothy Haden, 79, of Cedar Vale, Kansas, passed away Thursday morning, March 24, 2011 at William Newton Hospital in Winfield.

Born May 28, 1931 in Ames, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of Leroy M. and Marie K. (Milbers) Sturgeon. She was raised and received her early education in Lacy, Oklahoma. She attended Enid High School in Enid, Oklahoma, where she graduated in 1949. After high school she attended and graduated from Oklahoma State University School of Business. She then worked in accounting for O’Mealy’s cafeteria restaurant chain in Oklahoma City.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Joel M. Haden on August 10, 1952 in Ames, Oklahoma. The couple made their first home in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The family moved around with Joel while he was in the Army. After his time in the Army the family moved to Cedar Vale, Kansas. In 1960 the family moved to the Haden Ranch near Cedar Vale. After her children began school Dorothy returned to school at Southwestern College where she received a degree in Teaching. She then went to work at Dexter High School as a business teacher where she remained until her retirement. Dorothy was a member of the Walnut Valley Quilter‘s Guild, the Alpha Tau chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Cedar Vale Historical Society, and the Non Peril Club. She enjoyed reading and quilting.

Haden of Cedar Vale; Michael Haden of Hennessey, OK; John Haden and wife, Rhonda of Cedar Vale; Her grandchildren: Joel M. Haden, II; Jarvis Haden; Kinlee Haden; Tucker Haden; Tyler Haden; Melissa Haden; T.J. Haden; Cody Haden; Wyatt Haden; Trevor Abitz; Katrina Abitz; and Her great grandchildren: Joel Raife; Emalee Haden.

In addition to her parents Dorothy was preceded in death by her sister and four brothers.

Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at 10:30 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield.

A memorial has been established in Mrs. Haden’s name for the Cedar Vale Museum and for the American Macular Degeneration Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.


Tracy Hobart, 46, of Burden, Kansas, passed away Saturday evening, March 5, 2011 near Dexter, Kansas.

Born on May 24, 1964 in Wichita, Kansas, she was the daughter of Bill and Jane (Butz) Eberhardt. She was raised and received her education in Wichita.

She was united in marriage to Robert Hobart on February 15, 1986 in Wichita. Tracy attended Cowley County Community College Cosmetology School and later went on to operate and own Tracy’s Daycare. She and Bob owned and operated Bob’s Liquor Store in Dexter and she was currently working as a dietary cook at the Dexter Care Center.

Tracy was a member of the Burden United Methodist Church in Burden. She enjoyed cooking, children and raising her family.

Her family includes: her husband, Bob of the home; her sons, Chase Hobart and Chad Hobart both of Burden; her mother, Jane Hayden of Augusta, KS; her mother-in-law, June Hobart of Goddard, KS; her granddaughter, Madison Hobart; her brothers, Bill Eberhardt and wife Jennifer of Augusta, KS, and George Hayden and wife Karla of Wichita, KS; and her sister, Doris Hayden of Broken Arrow, OK. She was preceded in death by her father, Bill Eberhardt; her step-father, Delbert Hayden and her father-in-law, Chet Hobart.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at the Burden Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, March 8, 2011. The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M., that evening.

A memorial has been established in Tracy’s name for the Dexter Care Center. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.


Lawrence Nick "Dutch" Henery, 97, of Cedar Vale, Kansas, died February 27, 2011 at Sedan, Kansas.

He was born November 15, 1913 in Caldo County, Cyril, Oklahoma. He was the son of Edward and Elizabeth “Schmitt” Henery. Dutch attended Cyril schools. He was united in marriage to Bonnie Day of Dexter, Kansas on April 8, 1941.

Dutch started his career with his uncle, Jack Henery, as a heavy equipment operator on road construction until 1942. He served his country in the United States Army from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1945. He then returned to road construction until 1948 when he was employed as a heavy shovel operator at Peabody Coal Mine at Montrose, Missouri for thirty plus years. Dutch was the last living original big shovel operator for Peabody Coal Company. He was a member of local union 1122, District 14, honored by three consecutive union presidents. He was selected as the grand marshal for the Peabody Coal Mine celebration, 2002, and grand marshal for the Labor Harvest Picnic Parade in 2007.

Dutch and Bonnie bought the Flying D Ranch north of Cedar Vale after retirement in 1978. They belonged to the Old Time Fiddlers and Pickers and the American Legion Post #10 in Winfield, Kansas. Dutch enjoyed playing the fiddle and dancing with Bonnie. He was baptized in 1965 at Deepwater Christian Church in Missouri, where he served as both Sunday School Teacher and Elder. Locally, he was a member of Dexter Christian Church and served as their greeter. Dutch also served as a boy scout leader in Missouri.

Survivors include: His wife: Bonnie of the home; His son: E. Nick Henery of Washington D.C.; His daughter: Lydia Sue Norlund of Blue Springs, Missouri; His grandchildren: Dustin Norlund of St. Maarten Island; Natalie Norlund of Kansas City, Missouri; Nicole Henery of Ft. Collins; and Giovanna Henery of Denver, Colorado; and adopted granddaughter, Paulie Warton of Atlanta; His great grandchild: Ashton Henery Pease, son of Natalie Norlund; His sister-in-law: Naomi Waldorf of Arkansas City, Kansas; His brother: Vel Dean Henery of Cyril, Oklahoma; and His brother-in-law: John Day of Reno, Nevada.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Henery and mother, Elizabeth Henery; and his sisters, Lucille Graffs and Leona Reardon.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 3, 2011 at 10:30 A.M. at Dexter Christian Church. Interment and military committal honors will follow at Dexter Cemetery. Friends may call at Dexter Christian Church on Wednesday evening from 5 to 7. The family will greet visitors during this time. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Melvin Leland Franzen, 85, of rural Goessel, passed away February 19, 2011, at his home.

Services will be held at 9:30 AM Thursday at Tabor Mennonite Church Cemetery with a memorial service to follow at 10:30 AM at Tabor Mennonite Church. Pastor Corey Miller will officiate.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 PM Wednesday at Miller-Ott Funeral Home. The family will be present from 6 to 8.

Memorials are to Tabor Mennonite Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Melvin was born November 23, 1925, at the Franzen home place just north of Goessel. He was the third child born to John and Kornelia (Klassen) Franzen. He was a farmer, and since 1974 the owner/operator of Franzen Repair. He was a member of Tabor Mennonite Church, rural Goessel.

On March 25, 2950, he married Mildred Jean Schmidt at Tabor Mennonite Church.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mildred Franzen; two daughters, LaVerle Franzen, Newton, and Teresa Kennedy, and her husband, Loyd, Cedar Vale; son, Doyle Franzen, and his wife, Nancy, rural Newton; six grandchildren, Heather Kennedy, Bethany Kennedy, Andrew Kennedy, and Alex Kennedy, Jeff Franzen and Lane Franzen; brother, Eugene Franzen, rural Canton; and sister, Marjorie Janzen, North Newton.


Gary Leon Myers, 74, of Cedar Vale, Kansas, passed away Monday morning, February 7, 2011 at his home. Born October 12, 1936 in Wauneta, Kansas, he was the son of Leward Edmond and Alice Florence (Hull) Myers. He was raised and educated in Cedar Vale, graduating from Cedar Vale High School in 1954.

Gary married Alice "Pat" Marie Castoe on February 2, 1957 in Sedan, Kansas. To this union, four children were born, Tammy Alice, Dallas Wynn, Sandra Marlene, and Gary Shawn. Gary and his family made their home in Salida, Colorado before moving to Cedar Vale in 1975.

He worked for the Mondarch Dairy in Salida, Colorado for 18 years. He went into business with hi father-in-law at B&G Welding for two years and then began work for Caney Valley Electric until his retirement in 1988. Mrs. Myers preceded Gary in death on August 19, 2006.

Gary enjoyed hunting and fishing and especially loved spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by: His daughter: Tammy Miller and husband, Dwight of Cedar Vale; His sons: Wynn Myers and wife, Brenda of Cedar Vale; and Shawn Myers and wife, Tammy of Emporia; His brothers: Mickey Myers and wife, Kay of Cedar Vale; and Dwight Myers and wife, Irene of Wellington; His 7 grandchildren: Letha, Amber, Christy, Marty, Dallas, Shawna and Gary Dean; his 22 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, Gary was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra, his brother, Newton Myers, and his great-grandson, Nathan Stone.

Graveside funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 10, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at the Cedar Vale Cemetery in Cedar Vale. The family will greet friends at the long shed following the service. Miles Funeral Service in Winfield is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials have been established in Mr. Myers name for the Cedar Vale Museum and for the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.


Donna Maxine Trigg, age 83, of Cedar Vale, Kansas passed away Saturday, July 24, 2010 at the Sedan City Hospital. She was born January 20, 1927 in Cleveland, Oklahoma to Samuel and Ada (Jones) Bridges. She attended school in Garber, Oklahoma and Sedan High School in Sedan, Kansas.

She married Virgil Trigg on October 8, 1946. He preceded her in death in 2001. She worked as a surgical scrub technician for Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church of Cedar Vale, Kansas. She enjoyed playing bingo at the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home and loved her little dog.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandy Wood and husband D. Ray of Copan, Oklahoma and Cheryl Graves and husband Jim of Newkirk, Oklahoma; three sisters, Madelean Sanders of Wellsville, Kay Sproat of Lutz, Florida and Jeanie Jarboe and her husband Delbert of Cedar Vale, Kansas; six grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Virgil, her sister, Doris Worthington and one brother, Leslie Bridges.

Cremation has taken place and a Graveside Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at the Cedar Vale Cemetery in Cedar Vale, Kansas with Reverend Paul Stetz officiating.

Floyd M. "Pat" Patteson, of Cedar Vale, died Saturday, July 3, 2010 at Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan. He was born September 13, 1928 in the Round Mound area east of Cedar Vale to Walker and Nora Edna (Ferguson) Patteson. Pat grew up in the Round Mound area and attended school at Cedar Vale.

Pat was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. On July 1, 1951 he married Mary Marshall at Hewins, Kansas. Following their marriage they made their home in Cedar Vale where Pat began working for Caney Valley Electric working his way up to assistant manager. They moved to Altamont, Kansas where Pat was manager of Twin Valley Electric Cooperative. He later worked for Great Plains Electric in Lamar, Missouri as construction superintendent on location throughout the four state area. Then he was construction supervisor at Cimarron Electric in Kingfisher, Oklahoma until retiring in 1992. After leaving Kingfisher he was Resident Engineer for AMA in Joplin, Missouri.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Patteson of the home; one son, Steve Patteson and his wife Diane of Racine, WI; one daughter, Montra Beeler of Cedar Vale; two grandchildren, Gina Marie Patteson of Racine, WI, and, Marshall Leon Beeler of Cedar Vale; and two friends that he considered grandchildren; Travis Richardson and Michelle Golden; brother-in-law Leland Wilson of Dewey, Oklahoma; sister-in-law, Louise Orsbun of Fort Smith, Arkansas and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Pansy Fite.

Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 8, 2010 at Round Mound Cemetery east of Cedar Vale with Reverend Jerry Bever officiating. Following the service the family will receive friends at the Long Shed in Cedar Vale

Charles Roger Lyke, 71, of Cedar Vale, Kansas, passed away Wednesday evening, March 31, 2010 at his home.

Born on October 13, 1938 in Winfield, Kansas, he was the son of Charles H. and Ruth Anne (Sitton) Lyke. He was raised and received his education in Cambridge, Kansas, and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1956. Roger later attended Cowley County Junior College and Kansas State University.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1961 until 1963 as a Private First Class. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Cambridge.

He was united in marriage to Jeanette Goode on September 25, 1964 in Burden, Kansas. Roger started working for Cities Service Gas Company at Greensburg, Kansas. He worked for Cities Service/Williams Gas Company and retired in 1998 following 33 years of service.

He was a gold card member of the PRCA. Roger was also a member of the American Legion Post #201 in Cedar Vale, and the National Rifle Association. His hobbies included building saddles, being outdoors, hunting and fishing.

His family includes: His wife: Jeanette of the home; His son: Tyler Lyke of Pottstown, PA; His daughter: Dawn Lyke of Cedar Vale, KS; His sister: Karen Fouts and husband Wally of Costa Mesa, CA; His aunt: Marquerite Reece of Winfield, KS; His sister-in-laws: Nancy Schmid of Cheyenne, WY; Billie Finley and husband Sol of Winfield, KS; Sherry Lancaster and husband Jim of Atlanta, GA; Deborah Collingsworth and husband Steve of Arkansas City, KS; and Robin Goode of Arkansas City, KS; and A host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at 1:30 P.M., Thursday, April 8, 2010 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Inurnment will follow at Round Mound Cemetery, northeast of Cedar Vale.

Memorials have been established in Roger's name for the American Cancer Society and Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made at the funeral home.


Max Mayo Vaughan, age 92, of Cedar Vale, Kansas passed away Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at the Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan.

He was born May 8, 1917 in rural Chautauqua County, Kansas to Willie H. and Jewel (Appleby) Vaughan. He was educated in Pleasant Hill schoolhouse and Grenola High School. He graduated from Cedar Vale High School in 1937 and attended one year at Cowley County Community College in Arkansas City, Kansas.

He served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946 during World War II as a radar technician.

He married Dorothy Shrope on March 19, 1959 in Tijuana, Mexico.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy Vaughan of the home in Cedar Vale, Kansas; one step-daughter, Dorothy Hall of Cedar Vale, Kansas; two brothers, Victor Vaughan and his wife Virginia of Wichita, Kansas and Willie Vaughan, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth of Winfield, Kansas; five step-grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; seventeen nieces and nephews; twenty-four plus great-nieces and nephews; sixteen plus great-great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant brother Vance Leon; a half brother Haldean; brothers Wayne and Jay and a sister Jean Pack and one step-son James Shrope.

Family and Friends may call from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Sunday, February 14, 2010 at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan with the family greeting friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 15, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Grenola United Methodist Church with Chaplain Larry Womacks officiating. Burial will follow at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Grenola, Kansas.

Zelda Wilkinson, age 96, of Cedar Vale passed away Saturday morning February 6, 2010 at the Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan. 

She was born south of Hewins, Kansas to Sam E. and Viola (Blankinship) Wilkinson.She went to school in Hewins until the eighth grade and then she went to Cedar Vale High School graduating in 1935.

After High School she entered nurses training school in Wichita, Kansas graduating as a Licensed Registered Nurse in 1938. She worked in Kansas City for six years, as the Director of Nurses and then moved to Dallas, Texas where she spent one year before moving to Pawhuska, Oklahoma where she worked for two years. After returning to Cedar Vale she worked many years for Dr. Hayes and also in Sedan for Dr. Taylor until her retirement in 1978.

She was a member of the Cedar Vale Baptist Church and the Rebekah Lodge in Cedar Vale.  She loved bowling and playing cards.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters. She is survived by two nieces; Winajean McKenzie of Cedar Vale, Kansas and Linda Travis of Wichita, Kansas; two nephews, Royal Kennedy of Cedar Vale, Kansas and Melvin Kennedy of Monett, Missouri; and many great nieces and nephews.

Family and Friends may call on Monday, February 8, 2010 from 12:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan.

Church services will be held Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Cedar Vale, Kansas with Pastor Mark Davis officiating. Burial will follow at the Cedar Vale Cemetery.

Betty L. Holt, age 76, of Newton, Kansas, formerly of Grainola, Oklahoma passed away Monday, February 1, 2010 at the Newton Presbyterian Manor in Newton, Kansas.

She was born August 19, 1933 in Grainola, Oklahoma to Bert and Bessie (Farrington) Kelly. She graduated from Cedar Vale High School in 1952. She married Fred Hawkins in 1953 and they later divorced. She married Bud Holt in 1964 and they later divorced.

She was a small business owner and lived in Cedar Vale, Kansas for 67 years before moving to Wichita, Kansas for 4 years, later moving to Newton, Kansas where she resided for the past four years. 

She was a member of the Cedar Vale United Methodist Church. She loved sports, especially basketball and football. She loved her family and enjoyed being with them, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed selling Avon products.

She is survived by one son, Doug Holt and his wife Kim of rural Cedar Vale, Kansas; one daughter, Terri Hawkins of Wichita, Kansas; two step-daughters, Tammy Holt of Peculiar, Missouri and Tracy Pratt of Branson, Missouri; two sisters, Roberta Holverson of Wichita, Kansas and Cleota Steinbach of Overton, Nebraska and three grandchildren, Andrew Holt of St. Paul, Kansas, Denton Holt of Pittsburg, Kansas and Chelsea Holt of Piedmont, Kansas; four nephews, Michael Holler, Pat Holler, Mike Steinbach, and Steve Steinbach; four nieces, Trudy Swint, Ginger Steinbach, Cindy Davenport, and Lisa Muncaster.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Robin Muncaster.

The casket will be closed and friends may sign the register book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 3, 2010, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursday, February 4, 2010 and from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Friday, February 5, 2010 the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan.

Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 5, 2010 at the Cedar Vale Cemetery in Cedar Vale, Kansas with Reverend Jerry Bever of the First United Methodist Church of Sedan officiating.
